HTC is calling it "jewellery-grade," with each one hand-finished by craftsmen, and it certainly shows. Let's get this out the way at the start – the design is, by far, the most amazing part of the HTC One M9. However, the key question remains: is this package still good enough to warrant the extra cash when you can get the likes of the OnePlus 3 for a similar price? Have the improvements added more to the mix or is the HTC One M9 a sign of the company treading water, adding nuance rather than innovation? Design It's a two tone design (well, the Silver/Gold and Gold/Pink versions have a contrasting band around the side, whereas the Gunmetal Grey and Gold on Gold versions don't) that uses a single piece of metal for the entire phone – it really feels better packaged than previous HTC phones. The metallic chassis is back and is bolder than ever. The resolution is "only" 1080p, but again, some still question whether the pin-sharp QHD resolution is needed unless you're intent on using your phone in a VR headset, especially as it's harder on battery life.

We’ll be bringing you more on the cameras and performance in our full review of the One M9+, coming up shortly. There are some things that haven't been improved over 2014's HTC One M8 though: the screen is still "only" 5 inches, which could be too big or too small depending on your opinion on the subject. While macro, daylight and HDR shots work well, the camera struggles to focus in low light, and the flash doesn’t do a great job either. The One M9+’s cameras are a definitel improvement over the One M8 ( review), but they’re still not perfect. While the noise levels have been reduced, it’s apparent that the flash hasn’t been diffused well enough, making the pin in the centre look more washed out than the other two. Turning on the flash has helped to improve the previous image, but the subjects still aren’t in clear focus. However, the camera has had trouble focussing, making the subject look slightly out of focus. There is a bit of grain, but not enough to be disruptive.Īs with the night shot above, you can make out the colours on the pins in this low light shot. In this shot taken at night, the colours have been reproduced well despite the poor lighting.

This sample shot displays a good amount of detail, with our only complaint being the slightly oversaturated skin tone. On the One M9+ it moves to the front, and subsequently functions as a great selfie shooter. When it was used as a primary camera, the UltraPixel sensor on the One M8 was often criticised for not standing up to the competition. Our only complaint is the slight hint of over sharpening, but overall the image has been greatly improved. The camera has done a great job of improving the shadows, and brightening the image without washing it out. The HDR mode has worked like magic for the image. Large parts of the image appear darkened, with many of the elements in the background indistinguishable. Taken in full auto mode, this image is a great scene for testing the HDR mode. However, the subject isn’t as sharp as we would have liked. Zoom into the image above and you can see even more of the creepy-crawly, from the fur on its limbs, to the pattern of its web, to its mummified snack. The spider and its web are clearly defined in the foreground, while the background has been blurred to create a nice depth of field effect. This macro shot displays all the gory details clearly, leaving nothing to the imagination. The colours look a tad dull, but we can’t fault the camera too much considering that it was a cloudy day. In this long shot, the camera has been able to capture all the details in the image really well, from the hills and clouds at the rear to the planes and trucks in the front.
